Roy and I met in 1989 playing pool. He gave me his business card and said to call him sometime and we could play pool after work. Well, I probably would not have called except for a girl friend of mine talked me into calling him. We have been together every since. We both lived and grew up in the Kansas City area, me in Kansas and Roy in Missouri. Well when we decided to hitch up there was no me going to live in MO. So I took Roy to a college basketball game (which he never ever watched). The game was of course at Allen Field House at KU. The game was KU vs. MU. He said it didn’t matter who won because he could root for either team and be happy. KU won and he’s been a KU fan ever since oh and he moved to KS.
Roy had worked for Coopers animal health facility for 25 yrs., and when they shut the facility down we started a pet shop in Lawrence KS. in 1996.
The pet shop was really great. Roy was elated. You see he had kept reptiles since he was 16 years old. I helped out for a while then went back to a purchasing position. Four years later I was downsized and took another job. It was close to home and paid well but just a paper pushing job. I was less than happy. Roy was getting more stressed at the pet store, not sleeping, always there, home very late, etc. Roy and a friend of his went to west Texas for a week to hunt. He called and mentioned there was a motel for sale. By the time he got home I had looked on the internet and found another one for sale in west Texas. A month later we were both in Texas looking at motels. I think we new before we got home that we were going to risk everything to buy one of the motels. But in all honesty we gave ourselves a month and half to come to a decision to sell everything and change our lives.
That was 2003 and we are still in Sanderson, Texas. We could not think of a better place to live.
